This year finds only splashes of wildflowers in my fields.
Last April brought an ocean of reds, blues and yellows. Today offers only puddles surrounded by seas of brown.
Everyone has an opinion as to why so few flowers this season. The majority gravitates to the deep freeze of February. So many seedlings had already sprung into action when the single-digit stretch arrived.
The remnant knows no difference, however. It goes about its days ignorant to what might have been. Happy to simply be alive and blooming.
Flowers don’t do “what if?”
We humans do.
What if she had said “Yes!”? What if he had arrived early?
What if the house would have sold sooner? What if the hail would have gone around us?
What if we would have closed the deal? What if he stopped drinking?
Most of our “What if’s?” paint pictures of happier outcomes. They try to connect the dots between what is and what could have been if only “What if?”
Jesus invites us to live in what is.
To rest in knowing what is is something He can handle. Part of His sovereign plan. Not just for the world but also for you and me individually.
To rest in knowing “What if?” is only for this earth. One day the risen Jesus will return making every “What if?” obsolete.
No more wondering and longing when what is is perfect.
For now, remember Jesus’ crucifixion on the cross and resurrection from the grave. They’re the ultimate what is.
